Ornithological bike routes around the lakes of Southern Cordoba province: Zóñar Lake (Laguna de Zóñar)
Together with the specialized company Subbética Friends Bike’s Friends and having Cortijo San Francisco as our base, we propose a low difficulty ornithological route to the nearest lake,
Laguna de Zóñar. Being the only lake in Andalusia, it is located on the migration route of many birds to and from Africa, Northeastern Europe or even Asia. In contrast to the rest of Andalusia, this lake has water throughout the year, so it makes a perfect resting place for these transcontinental migratory birds as well as a shelter for the summer.
The route “Zóñar Lake” begins at Cortijo San Francisco and runs through a landscape of olives, carobs (Ceratonia), tamarisk, reeds (Phragmites) and oleanders (Nerium oleander) among others. This vegetation makes Laguna de Zóñar a paradise for aquatic birds like coots (Fulica atra), mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), purple herons (Ardea purpurea) and reds ducks (little ringed plovers). Threatened birds inhabit Laguna Zóñar as well, like westerns marsh harriers (Circus aeruginosus), white-headed ducks (Oxyura leucocephala) or marbled ducks (Marmaronetta angustirostris).
And nothing more rewarding after the route than finding a hearty lunch ready and waiting at the Cortijo.
